MORISH
MORISH
A Legend of Love, Jealousy, and Revenge
Around the year 1000, during the Moorish domination of Sicily, a very beautiful young woman captivated a Moor who carried with him a secret, that of returning to the East where his wife and children awaited him.
Wounded in her pride, she plotted her revenge by beheading him so that her beloved would remain with her forever. She turned his head into a vase and planted basil in it, a plant always associated with divine symbolism and sacredness.
From that moment on, according to legend, the basil grew lush thanks to the tears of the girl.
The beauty of that plant aroused envy among the other inhabitants of the neighborhood, who had artisans construct terracotta vases in the shape of a Moor's head, commonly called a Turk's head.
